SIDS is NOT just something that happens to other people, and to a large extent it is preventable.

What is SIDS?

SIDS (or sudden infant death syndrome) is the sudden death of an infant, under one year of age that remains unexplained after a complete post-mortem investigation. In the US it occurs in approximately 1 in 1,000 babies. Most cases occur between the ages of two and four months. For unknown reasons, SIDS is higher in males than females by a ratio of 1.5 to 1.0.

What Causes SIDS?

SIDS seems to be a combination of many factors: immature development of cardio-respiratory control mechanisms, failure to wake from sleep in response to breathing difficulties, medical conditions that compromise breathing, and unsafe sleeping practices. SIDS researchers now also believe that many SIDS deaths are attributable to suffocation rather than a defective physiological or neurological response from the baby. Suffocation results from the baby breathing and re-breathing the same air until the oxygen in the air is depleted.

Preventing SIDS

1. Place your baby on the back to sleep, for every sleep, unless advised otherwise by your pediatrician. Back-sleeping babies awaken easier; have a lower chance of getting overheated; breathe more oxygen and are less likely to suffocate.

2. If possible, breastfeed your baby. Breastfed babies have an up to three times lower SIDS rate.

3. Do not smoke during pregnancy, and keep your baby's environment smoke-free. Studies show that exposure to cigarette smoking at least doubles the risk of SIDS.

4. Don't let your baby get too warm. SIDS researchers believe that overheating may cause respiratory control centers in some babies to fail.

5. Make sure that your baby cannot suffocate, by ensuring that baby's nose and mouth, are not obstructed by bedding or objects such as soft toys.

6. Make up the baby crib according to safe sleeping practices.

* Place baby's feet at the foot of the baby crib so that he or she can't wriggle under the covers.

* Covers should come no higher than baby's chest.

* Use a thin blanket. Soft crib bedding can suffocate infants.

* Tuck the blanket in well on both sides of the crib under the baby crib mattress.

* Remove quilts, soft toys, pillows, comforters and other bedding from the baby crib.

* Use a clean, firm, snug fitting crib mattress and a fitted crib sheet, preferably organic.

* Crib bumpers are not recommended.

7. Make sure that there is a good flow of fresh air. Open a window, or keep the door partially open.

8. Use a baby crib that meets current safety standards, preferably organic. The chemicals out-gassed by wood veneers and finishes are considered among the possible causes of SIDS.

9. Make use of an apnea monitor.

10. If possible let baby sleep in the parents' room for the first year. For unknown reasons, the close proximity of a baby to its parents during sleep has been shown to reduce SIDS risk. (Note that baby should NOT be placed IN the parents' bed due to the risk of suffocation.)

11. Consider offering a pacifier at nap-time and bedtime. Research now indicates an association between pacifier use and reduced SIDS risk.

12. Don't be in too much of a hurry for your baby to sleep through the night. Babies that are trained to sleep through the night, before they are physically ready, are at a higher SIDS risk.

13.Ensure that others caring for the infant (child care provider, relative, friend, babysitter) are aware of these SIDS prevention measures.

How to Organize Patterns Printed From the Internet

Have you ever seen a great tutorial for a quilting or sewing project from a blog or website and printed it off? And then you saw another one? And then another? Soon, you have pages flying all over your house and you don't know where you got them from and they are in no kind of order.

Well, if you're looking for help organizing your sewing and quilting patterns printed from the Internet, you have come to the right place. This article will show you how using office supplies can help you easily organize all that wonderful information.

The first thing that you will need is a three-ring binder. Do not get one of those small ones. You will need a binder that has at least a two-inch ring. It should also have a pocket on the spine for an insert and a clear front where you can insert your own cover page. I'm thinking of the binders you receive at conferences. The binder should also have two pockets.

Once you have the binder, you will need to order a box of sheet protectors. Now check to make sure that you have enough ink in your printer.

Once you have these three items, you are in business. Every time you print a pattern from the Internet, slip it in a sheet protector and place it in the binder. Always, always, always write down the URL of the site where you printed the pattern, the name of the site, a contact email and any restrictions on use. By the time you want to use the pattern, you may have forgotten this information.

Follow this process on a regular basis and soon you have all your patterns in one place. I also place any patterns I like from quilting magazines in my binder.

If you are on a buying diet, flipping through your binder is almost like looking at a catalog. It is better than a catalog, though, because you already have all the patterns!

You will want to label your binder on its spine so that when you see it on the bookshelf, you can immediately pick it out. As your pattern collection grows, you might have a separate binder for handbags and wallets. Another binder may contain only quilt pattens. Because you can switch out the paper in the binder, you are not limited to what to choose.

The advantages of this system is that you keep your patterns in tact. Plus, you can find that perfect pattern more easily, leaving you more time for sewing! And isn't that what's important?

Choosing the right crib mattress pad for your baby wouldn't seem like it would be a difficult thing to do. It might not even be something that you intended to do. Finding one with a high quality wrap-around skirt or holding straps can prevent this type of problem.

Most manufacturers who make baby mattresses also make fitting mattress pads, though they may not be as readily available. A quality mattress pad for your baby's crib is an investment in their health, happiness, and sleep quality. It can be easy to forget the pad altogether, but it is an important part of a crib and of a healthy and sanitary sleeping area for your child. Do not skimp on the crib mattress pad - you could find that you will regret not purchasing one later on.
